Recycling?

by Miya Gorodischer, Class of 2018

Have you ever noticed the little blue recycling bins around school? If not, they’re there. Instituting the bins was a fantastic idea, but not everyone knows how to use them correctly. A blue garbage bucket means plastic, metal, and glass objects get thrown away in it; green means paper, but it’s still not clear what the pails were put there for. Paper, plastic? Who knows. Does the school even recycle what is in the bins?

It would be smart to make the students and faculty aware of what we are supposed to put into these blue pales that sit next to classroom doors. We might all have our own thoughts about what we do with them, but of course none of them are the same. If they’re for plastic, what kind? Do we put glass in there too? How about metal? And what about if it’s for paper? Do paper towels go in there as well as scrap paper? Tissues? We need to institute a uniform rule about how to use the bins and we all need to be informed. Maybe we can hang signs over the cans telling what does and doesn’t go in them. What ever they are here for, they are important and most useful if used in the correct way.
